There are 10 IYMP providers throughout Australia. The Indigenous Success Australia Group is the Canberra based provider for IYMP.
What is IYMP?
Indigenous Youth Mobility Program (IYMP) is a DEST funded initiative that supports young Indigenous people between 16 and 24 years old who live in remote localities. These young people who want to further their studies and work opportunities are invited to participate in a location that is close to training and education opportunities.
Canberra Services - The IYMP services include:
- Training and employment services (ISA works with other Education, Training and Employment Service Providers to help with your education and training needs);
- Work with Aboriginal Hostels Limited (AHL) for safe and supported Accommodation through our Kambah and Turner locations;
- Mentoring and personal support;
- Local Support Team to oversee the program and make sure that the interest of the young people are considered;
- If you get sick Winnunga Nimmityjah (Aboriginal Medical Service) is open during 9am-1pm ; 2-4.30pm. Transport can be arranged in certain cases - Tel: 6284 6222; and
- ACTION buses are the public transport throughout Canberra.
Objectives
The objectives of the IYMP are to:
- improve access to training and employment opportunities in major centres for young Indigenous Australians from remote communities;
- increase the number of young Indigenous Australians participating in accredited training;
- increase the number of Indigenous people employed in occupations in particular areas of community need such as trades, nursing, accountancy, business management and teaching, and;
- support the economic development in remote communities by building the capacity of local Indigenous youth to take up skilled jobs in their communities.
Eligibility
To receive assistance under this program, a young Indigenous person must be from a remote community. In addition they must generally be:
- aged between 16 and 24 years upon commencement of IYMP, and;
- supported by his or her family/community in their decision to relocate to a major centre to undertake a training and employment opportunity.

- To strive to develop a winning attitude;
- To work toward achieving your training plan;
- To abide by AHL rules and responsibilities by paying your rent on time and cleaning your room and helping out as advised by the Hostel Manager. (More detailed information is provided in their Agreement);
- To treat other IYMP participants with respect;
- To advise the program coordinator if you have any problems so that they can be dealt with quickly;
and
- To enjoy yourself and have a willingness to make your dreams come true!
Commitment
This program can work for you if you are committed and motivated to wanting to make a difference in your life. If you accept the responsibilities of participation provided by IYMP you will be required to sign a statement of commitment.
